Who’s to blame for this?
Nick Hamze (on the left): Names the fonts.
Matt Cole Wilson (on the right): Does everything else.
Why the weird name?
I’ve been building a pretty large collection of type specimens and one trend I noticed is that many type foundries had stupid long names and were frequently referenced by just their initials (usually three letters).
From there lol just came into my head. It didn’t hurt that I could register the domain foundry.lol.
What’s lol stand for?
I knew I wanted to use lol as it sounded cool but I didn’t want it to stand for laugh out loud so I asked my buddy Matt (the guy who actually makes the fonts) and he came up with land of letterforms which I really like and I’ll pretend that is where I got lol from.
